New!  $45,000 in Scholarship Money Available

The Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation (FRLAEF) has secured funding to award $45,000 in scholarships.  (These scholarships are in addition to the $40,000 in scholarships that were awarded at Florida’s Salute to Excellence Awards Luncheon in September.)  There will be one $2,500 scholarship for the top ProStart applicant and              one $2,500 scholarship for the top LMP applicant.  There will also be 20 $2,000 scholarships for ProStart and LMP applicants.  The scholarship awards must be distributed no later than June 30, 2007.  Therefore, the scholarship recipients must currently be seniors in high school.  The recipients must be able to provide proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution by June 30, 2007.

Students that received a FRLAEF scholarship during Florida’s Salute to Excellence Awards Luncheon may apply for this scholarship.  To be considered for these scholarships, please complete the following and return *with a copy of student’s transcript* to the FRLAEF no later than 5pm on Friday, May 4, 2007.

6th Annual National ProStart Student Invitational

The Sixth Annual National ProStart Student Invitational (NPSI) took place April 20-22, 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Management Team from Eastside High School in Gainesville earned Third Place. Each team member received over $20,000 in scholarships.  Team members included Kane Ahern, Ben Rooks, Merry Anthony-Deford and Ryan Dupree. Their ProStart instructor is Billie DeNunzio.
The Management Competition consisted of a Knowledge Bowl and a Case Study. The Knowledge Bowl was executed in a Jeopardy-style format. Each team competed in two rounds of the Knowledge Bowl. In the Case Study section teams were allotted 30 minutes prior to presenting their results to the judges.
The first and second place winners of the Management Competition were Oregon and Nevada respectively.
Eastside High School also competed in the Gourmet Meal competition. They represented Florida admirably but did not place in the top five.
The Gourmet Meal Team members were Billie Devlin, Richard Vaughn, Shane Danner, Elijah Gurman and Amber Foye (alternate).
The first, second and third place winners of the Gourmet Meal were Colorado, California and Ohio respectively.
Congratulations to Billie DeNunzio at Eastside High School as this is the fourth year she has taken teams to compete at the National ProStart Student Invitational.
