| 13th Annual ProStart Teacher Training Institute |
For the thirteenth year, the FRLAEF will conduct the ProStart Teacher Training Institute. This event will once again be held at Johnson & Wales University, North Miami campus.
The week-long training is built around topics covered in the ProStart curriculum. At the conclusion of the week, attendees should feel more comfortable teaching the ProStart curriculum to their students.
The FRLAEF along with its sponsors will cover the cost for all Florida ProStart instructors. This includes instruction, lodging and meals (excluding dinner on Tuesday and Thursday), chef coats and take-home educational materials. If you will not be teaching the ProStart curriculum during the 2008/2009 school year, the cost for you to attend is $800.
Registration brochures will be mailed in March.

| DOE Industry Certification |
The Florida Department of Education (DOE) has put in place industry certifications for your students. If a student attains an industry certification on the Perkins Technical Skill Attainment Inventory, that information will be used in the formula for meeting state performance measures related to accountability. Bottom line….student attainment of these certifications will affect future funding.
If a school wants to create a CAPE (Career and Professional Education) academy, among other things, it must offer a certification that is on the AWI (Agency for Workforce Innovation) Comprehensive Certification list (for example, National ProStart Certificate of Achievement). Additionally DOE awards “bonus funding” to school districts for students in CAPE academies who attain certain certifications on the AWI list and approved DOE funding list (average $1200 per student). Note – only registered CAPE academies are eligible for this bonus funding.
Currently, the National ProStart Certificate of Achievement has been approved under the Perkins, AWI and DOE bonus funding categories.
Both the Perkins TSA Inventory list and the AWI Comprehensive certification/DOE funding list are reviewed annually – certifications are added and deleted as deemed appropriate.

| Coach's ProStart Bottle Program |
Coach Joe Crosby was the keynote speaker at the FRLAEF’s Salute to Excellence Awards Luncheon in September. At the event he made the announcement regarding his commitment to give back to the kids he cares so much about. As a Board of Director for the NRAEF, Coach Crosby has always had a passion for kids, whether coaching on the gridiron for 21 years or working with students in ProStart programs throughout the state of South Carolina. His successful T-60 grill in Seneca, SC, led to the creation of Coach’s Low Country Brands, featuring Coach’s Low Country Seasoning. His passion to give back and help mentor the next generation of hospitality industry employees, managers and operators is evident in his recent partnership with the National Restaurant Association.
ProStart teachers can order cases of the small bottles of Coach’s Low Country Seasoning. After confirming the order is from a ProStart teacher, Coach’s ProStart Coordinator, Monica Miller, will approve the order and then arrange shipment on consignment. Coach’s Low County Brands (CLCB) will pay taxes and shipping costs.
Students then sell the seasoning for $5 per bottle. Coach suggests that the students “play around” with the seasoning and get familiar with it so they can describe ways to use it to potential customers.
Four dollars per bottle will be paid to CLCB; schools keep $1 per bottle. That’s 20%—a better margin than most school fund-raising programs.
Teachers are asked to send in payment of what has been sold or a status report every 30 days.
The FRLAEF encourages you to try this product for any number of applications. It’s great for blackening seafood, chicken, pork and beef or spicing up any recipe. Use it on vegetables, pasta dishes, potatoes and more…”It’s only limitation is your imagination”! Drew McLeod, VP of the FRLAEF has personally tried it on just about everything and has been amazed at how it enhances the flavor of the each product differently.
Contact Monica Miller at 307-286-8685 or monmil@msn.com to receive an order form. Priced at $48 per case of 12 (5.75 oz bottles) the product pricing is in line with many other seasonings.
You can also contact Drew with any questions at 850-224-2250 Ext. 227 or drew@frla.org. |
