Social Responsibility is “an ethical or ideological theory that an entity whether it is a government, corporation, organization or individual has a responsibility to society. This responsibility can be “negative”, meaning there is a responsibility to refrain from acting (resistance stance) or it can be “positive”, meaning there is a responsibility to act (proactive stance).” (Wikipedia)
What does that mean to the hospitality industry?
- As we all know, alcohol plays a role not only in our society but in the industry we serve, the hospitality industry.
- Underage drinking
- Binge drinking
- Overconsumption
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
- sexual behaviors
- the work environment
- But what is your role?
- Obey the law - unless you are 21 years of age, you are not legally allowed to possess or consume alcoholic beverages.
- Know the penalties and consequences of your behavior
The Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association Educational Foundation will be distributing a new Alcohol Awareness Unit Study curriculum to our instructors at our Teacher Training Institute at the North Miami Campus of Johnson & Wales University in June of 2010. This program will enhance the classroom experience of our nearly 20,000 students statewide and better prepare them for a career in the foodservice and hospitality industries.
We’re grateful to our sponsors, who have a similar commitment to Social Responsibility issues and the need to educate the next generation of hospitality industry employees and responsible citizens.
